What are Chia Seeds?

It’s a seed harvested from the “Salvia Hispanica” plant, a member of the mint family. Chia seeds were used by the Mayans and Aztecs as an energy boosting food and the trend continues today. Today it’s a hugely popular superfood due to it’s high quality nutritional profile.

When mixed with any liquid substances, chia seeds swell up resembling a consistency similar to tapioca - thick, creamy, and a bit gelatinous. When chia reaches the digestive liquids of your stomach, it swells and forms a gel. This gel slows down the rate at which digestive enzymes turn carbohydrates into sugar.

History of Chia Seed

The ancient Aztecs were the first to document the use of chia around 3500 BC and used it as an energy and endurance booster for their warriors. At this time in history, chia seeds were considered almost magical because of their ability to increase stamina and energy over long periods of time.

The Aztecs would march long distances on a daily basis and required the intake of high-energy fuel that prevented them from dehydration. The chia seed absorbs 12 times its weight when mixed with water, which prolongs hydration and helps retain electrolytes. According to historians, the Aztecs knew about chia’s many properties and used it to help protect joints, reduce inflammation as well as heal and moisturize their skin.
